There was a change of venue for the March meeting of Hepscott WI as we made our way to Cresswell House, headquarters of the Northumberland Federation of WIs at Seaton Burn.
For many this was their first visit and everyone was impressed by the recently installed and well-equipped kitchen where we enjoyed a demonstration of Food for Easter by Treasurer Sue Malloy.
Ably assisted by ‘sous chefs’ Chairman Hilary Robson and Vice Chairman Dorothy Sowerby, Sue showed how to make dishes using seasonal products such as eggs, chocolate and even hot cross buns. As she chopped, whisked, fried and baked she kept up a lively commentary. Delicious aromas filled the room and at last we had the chance to taste the results, and were not disappointed. We tried everything – salmon kedgeree, asparagus frittata, a gluten-free chocolate cake and a twist on bread and butter pudding.
This year is the WI centenary and one member from each institute has been invited to attend a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. We drew lots and President Margery Tate’s name was drawn. She is celebrating a special birthday in 2015 so going to London really crowns her year.
The next meeting will be the AGM on April 21.
