Flood gates at High Stanners in Morpeth were closed in the middle of the night as the risk of flooding increased.
The action was taken at approximately 3am by the Environment Agency following heavy rain yesterday evening.
A spokeswoman for the organisation said the dam on the Mitford Estate did not need to operate as the level of the River Wansbeck was not high enough.
She added that the river level has gone down this morning and the gates are set to be opened in the next few hours.
The video footage is of the river flowing by the Riverside Leisure Centre earlier this morning.
Meanwhile, a flood alert has been issued for the River Pont. Low lying land and roads are now being affected, including Ponteland Park.
At the moment, the Environment Agency does not expect to issue any flood warnings for the area, but the river level will continue to be monitored.
