Another flood warning has been issued for the River Wansbeck at Bothal and Sheepwash.

With persistent heavy rainfall throughout the day and more expected into the early hours of the morning, the Environment Agency has said that properties could be hit.

Its statement says: ‘Flooding to property, in particular at Sheepwash Gardens, is expected from approximately 8.15pm this evening.

‘The river level is expected to rise throughout the evening and it is expected to peak early tomorrow morning.

‘We are closely monitoring the situation.’

The organisation said earlier that at Morpeth, it may need to close the High Stanners flood gates again if the river rises to a similar level to last night.

The heavy rain has also caused disruption for motorists today and the slip road to the A197 from the A1 at Clifton remains closed.

Many northbound vehicles have had to go on to the slip road to the A697 in order to then access the slip road to Morpeth on the A1 southbound at Fairmoor.

Highways England says the section of the A197 is set to remain closed until about 11.45pm. Updates will be issued at www.highways.gov.uk/traffic-information
