Floral clock in park will be reinstated this summer
The Friends of Morpeth's Floral Clock, which is located in the town's popular Carlisle Park, are delighted to announce that the clock will be reinstated this summer.
Although it is one of only four floral clocks remaining in England, it was under threat as its hands had not turned for eight years and the box hedge numerals had blight.
When Barbara Ross started the campaign to raise £10,000 to save it last year, more than 900 members joining the Friends’ Facebook page proved that there was great public support and interest in the clock.
Donations have come from a range of sources and Northumberland County Council has agreed to offer financial and practical support for the reinstatement of the clock.
Morpeth town councillor Alison Byard, a committee member of the group, said: “The angle of the clock will be raised, making it more visible, and it will be carpet bedded in the traditional style, as it was in 1972.
“Plants have been ordered and they are expected to be in place in early June, in time for the summer judging of the 2018 Britain in Bloom competition.
“It is a perfect example of a local authority working with the community to embellish their town with planting and therefore should make a great contribution to Morpeth’s Bloom bid in the national competition.
“The clock and planting will be lit by the adjacent streetlight and protected by a security camera, courtesy of local firm Winn Electrical Services.
“The Friends will be holding an official launch event on Wednesday, June 27, with more details nearer the time.”
The campaign has received support from the Royal Horticultural Society and grants from the William Leech Foundation, local county councillors and the Mayor of Morpeth, Coun Nic Best.
The Friends group is continuing to raise funds for the future planting and maintenance of Morpeth’s Floral Clock.
