Formal bid for housing at former hospital site

Plans for hundreds of new homes on a key site in the northern part of Morpeth have been made official.

Members of the public can now view and comment on the Homes and Communities Agency’s (HCA) outline application for the development of up to 875 dwellings for the remainder of the former St George’s Hospital site.

The proposal also includes details for the construction of a link road and junction to connect to the Morpeth Northern Bypass.

This area has been identified by Northumberland County Council as a strategic location for future housing growth in Morpeth and approval has already been granted for 375 properties in the south east section of the site, the first set of which are currently being built.

The planning statement, put together by Arup on behalf of the HCA, includes the following.

‘The development would provide substantial benefits – the most significant of which would be the boost that the proposal would provide to housing supply, including a mix of both market and affordable homes.

‘The areas of woodland adjacent to the How Burn and to the south of the site would be retained and play areas would be provided across the site.’

Ian Askew, who lives near the site, submitted an objection as he is ‘deeply concerned about increased flooding risks to properties in Fulbeck and the impacts on the Cotting Burn wildlife corridor’.

The HCA planning statement says that a pond system would be set up to ‘attenuate flows for the entire plot to greenfield run-off before discharging into the Cotting or How Burn’.
