Four cows had to be destroyed after a road accident in Northumberland last night.

The A697 near Longhorsley was closed for two-and-a-half hours after the accident.

Police received a report of a collison between a van and a cow just after 8pm.

When they arrived, they discovered another two vehicles had also collided with cattle on the same stretch of road.

A vet was called and police closed the road while the damaged vehicles and animals were removed.

None of the drivers were injured, although four cows had to be destroyed.

Police are investigating the incident.
