From Kirkley to the Falklands

MRS Janet Wilkinson spoke to the members of Kirkley WI about her life on the Falkland Islands at the March meeting.

She had lived in the Falklands with her naval husband. Only the main islands are inhabited by humans, while over 700 small islands are the home to a variety of flora, fauna and birds.

The climate is mainly dry, however there can be all seasons in a day. The islands are well provisioned with schools, medical services and leisure facilities.

In her vote of thanks, Rosie Creighton commented on the excellent slides of the area’s wildlife.

The competition for an island photograph was won by Mary Carins.

During the business meeting, the domino, bowls and quiz teams were congratulated on their achievements. Members were reminded that the July meeting would be the summer outing to Monteviot House and Gardens.

The Harvester’s meeting would be in Ponteland on Wednesday, May 16, when Kirkley is the host institute. A visit to Brazil will be the subject of the April meeting.
