Growing stronger each year

ORGANISERS of the Middleton and District Leek Club Show have praised this year’s competitors for coping well with difficult growing conditions.

As well as the leek contest, the event includes industrial, vegetable and flower sections and a best dressed onions category.

Club Secretary Andrew Elliott said: “The event went well in the circumstances and we raised a decent amount of money for the club through a raffle, tombola and an auction of produce — those who took part in the auction were really generous.

“With the summer we had, many flowers were ready earlier than normal so the number of entries was down in that section and all the wet weather in the last couple of months made it tougher for vegetable growers.

“But we were pleasantly surprised at how good the produce was from the competitors.

“It’s a job to keep these shows going across the country as numbers decline, however it’s important to keep them going for those who grow and bake and our show still gets good support from locals.

“Club members are already planning ahead for next year’s show.”
