TWO Morpeth women have had a close shave to raise almost £2,000 for St Oswald’s Hospice.

Melissa Chirnside and Michelle Stewart had their hair shaved off in memory of Melissa’s mum Thomasina Dodds, who died of cancer last year.

The haircut, which was carried out by Wayne Morgan from Dave’s The Gentleman’s Barbers, was held as part of a wider charity night at the Waterford Lodge, which included an Elvis impersonator, drag queen and raffle.

A total of £1,926 has now been handed over to St Oswald’s and money is still coming in.

Miss Chirnside said: “We raised nearly double the amount we wanted to raise so it was absolutely brilliant. Everybody gave so much so I want to say a big thank-you. My Mam would be proud of the amount we have raised.

“I was petrified getting my head shaved, but it was worth it.”

Miss Chirnside now has a tattoo on her head to commemorate the event.
