A proposal has been put forward to restrict parking on an area of road in Morpeth town centre.

Concerns have been raised by businesses and Northumberland County Council’s parking services department about vehicles parking all day on an unrestricted hatched area of Bridge Street near the entrance to Sanderson Arcade.

As a result, the authority is now consulting on plans to turn it into a 30-minute time limit waiting bay from Monday to Saturday (8am to 6pm). No return would be allowed within two hours.

In a covering letter, highway safety programmes officer Dan Fraser said: ‘It has been reported that workers within Morpeth use this area to park all day instead of using one of the free long-stay car parks.

‘As this section is positioned centrally within the town centre, it has been highlighted that it would service the town better if it were a time-restricted bay.’
