A NEW campaign has begun to help healthcare staff understand the needs of patients with learning disabilities.
The People With Learning Disabilities (PWLD) Do You Understand? initiative has been set up by NHS North East and will initially target staff in hospitals, mental health trusts and the North East Ambulance Service.
It aims to improve the experience and safety for patients, ensure staff are aware of their needs and provide training.
Chairman of the Learning Disability Clinical Innovation Team Dr Dominic Slowie said: “This campaign encourages staff to think about the specific issues faced by those with learning disabilities and to take part in training to increase their understanding of the different needs of this group and their carers. This will ensure that all patients receive the same quality of care and help to prevent avoidable suffering.”
