Help is at hand for smokers who want to kick the habit.
National No Smoking Day takes place on Wednesday, encouraging people to be ‘Proud to be a Quitter’.
Smoking is the nation’s biggest killer, with half of long-term smokers dying prematurely from disease.
And while smoking rates in Northumberland are among the lowest in the North East, there is a wide range of advice and support available across the county to help people kick the habit.
Northumberland NHS Stop Smoking Service Manager Brenda Warner said: “We know it isn’t easy to quit, but there’s always lots of free support available.
“Our trained advisors work together with the patient to develop an individual treatment programme, which includes medication to deal with cravings, withdrawals and behaviour change.

“If you want to stop smoking and are considering using an e-cigarette, or are confused about which products are licensed as medicines and what to do about your smoking, then we are here to support you.
“Our NHS Stop Smoking Service advisors can help you decide on the best evidence-based treatment and tailor a support package just for you.
“It is never too late to stop smoking and the health benefits will be felt very quickly.”
Evidence shows that smokers are four times more likely to stop smoking for good if they have support from their local NHS stop smoking service.
Northumberland County Council Policy Board Member for Public Health Susan Dungworth said: “In life we’re told never to give up, to keep on going, but when it comes to smoking being a quitter is a good thing.
“We know stopping smoking can be very challenging. The first day without cigarettes is often the hardest, but free support is available this No Smoking Day and all year round.”
The Northumberland NHS Stop Smoking Service, which is provided by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, is urging smokers to make No Smoking Day the start of their quitting journey.
