Increase in dog owners falling foul of the law

Northumberland County Council’s zero-tolerance approach to dog fouling is getting results.

Three people have been fined at South East Northumberland Magistrates Court for not picking up after their pet and more than 100 fixed penalties of £75 each have been issued to dog owners so far in 2014.

The total number of fixed penalties for all of 2013 was 81. Areas where they have been issued this year include Druridge Bay/Hadston (six), Widdrington Station (five), Morpeth (four) and Pegswood (one).

Coun Ian Swithenbank, policy board member for streetcare and environment, said: “Not picking up after your dog is socially unacceptable.

“These prosecutions send out a clear message that we take this issue very seriously and we will direct our resources to take action against irresponsible dog owners who fail to clean up after their dogs.”
