Coastguard and lifeboat crews were called into action this afternoon to rescue a kayaker from the water in Northumberland.

A post on the HM Coastguard Northumberland Facebook page states: 'Newbiggin Coastguard, Amble Coastguard and Newbiggin Lifeboat were tasked this afternoon to reports of a kayaker in the water.

'Both Coastguard Rescue Teams responded immediately and proceeded to Snab Point in Cresswell. At the same time, Newbiggin Lifeboat was preparing to launch as quickly as possible.

'The lifeboat was on scene very quickly and was able to recover the casualty and his kayak from the sea. Another fellow kayaker was also recovered.

'The casualty was checked over and offered a few tips for sea safety, this included the new RYA App SafeTrx.

'We would like to remind everyone that if you head to sea, a life-jacket, flares and a VHF are absolutely essential. Mobile phones can not be reliable.'
