Landlords don’t understand rules

A survey by estate agent Reeds Rains reveals that nearly a quarter of landlords in the north east believe that legislation on letting out properties has become more confusing, and more than one in ten say they don’t fully understand it.

The confusion is partly due to regulations introduced as part of the tax changes in last summer’s budget, including requirements for landlords to check tenants’ immigration status.Hannah Davies, area lettings director for York-based Reeds Rains, said: “We recognise legislation changes can be difficult to keep up to date with, which is why Reeds Rains offer support for landlords by providing them an online solution through a landlord and tenants portal.

“This allows landlords to receive notifications of news updates and keep track of important to-do items, and it holds a record of all their property documents, keeping them informed and up to date.”
