Laura Weightman wins bronze at Commonwealth Games
Laura Weightman has won Commonwealth Games bronze in only her second ever 5,000m on the track.
The 26-year-old, from Lesbury, crossed the line in 15:25:84 in the final, which was screened live on the BBC this morning from the Gold Coast, Australia.
The Morpeth Harrier, who is a 1500m runner by trade, clawed her way back through the field before moving into third place on the final lap.
Her bronze medal follows the silver she won in the 1500m at the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
At the end of the race, and commentating for the BBC, her coach Steve Cram said: "It wasn't the fastest race. It was pedestrian early on but it was hot and humid. They looked like marathon runners by the time they finished. So well done Laura Weightman."
Weightman, representing England, finished behind the Kenyan pair of Hellen Obiri (winner) and Margaret Kipkemboi (second). Her bronze was England's 110th medal at the Games.
