Lives at risk, warns MEP

NORTH East MEP Fiona Hall says lives could be at risk due to limitations of a European emergency service.

People who dial 112 anywhere in the EU will be connected to the local emergency services free of charge, but many of the services are voice only, rendering them useless to deaf callers.

Now Ms Hall has signed a Written Declaration in Parliament calling for changes to ensure everyone can use the 112 number.

“It needs to be available to all and by using video technology or text based services you can immediately open it up to deaf people,” she said.

“This really is a matter of life and death.”
