An 18-year-old woman was walking along the footpath of the A197, near Morpeth Golf Club, when a man in a car stopped and offered her a lift.

This happened between 2.30am and 5am on Saturday, February 4.

She got into the vehicle and after driving a short distance, the man pulled into a lay-by and raped the woman.

Following inquiries, detectives have arrested a 55-year-old man. He has been interviewed and released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Helen Anderson said: “Officers are continuing to provide support to the victim while the investigation is on-going.

“We are still appealing for witnesses and want to hear from anyone who may be able to assist us. We are keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the relevant area in the early hours of Saturday, February 4, to contact us straightaway.”
