Mayor praises Morpeth flood support

MORPETH Mayor Mark Horton has spoken of his pride in the town’s community spirit.

Coun Horton, who ordered the opening of Morpeth Town Hall as a rest centre early on Tuesday morning, has praised the way people have come together to help each other through another flood.

“I’m very proud of Morpeth,” he said.

“People have been turning out and offering help wherever they can.

“One of the police officers was telling me that some of the young people from King Edward VI School had asked if there was anything they could do to help, such as putting sandbags out. I think that is wonderful.”

He added: “We opened the Town Hall so the residents had somewhere warm to sit and gather their thoughts, talk to friends and neighbours and work out what to do next. All our staff did an excellent job of providing assistance.”
