Milestone birthday for Jessie
Centenarian Jessie Dowson was delighted to receive a congratulatory card from the Queen.
Members of Jessie’s family went along to East Riding Care Home in Morpeth, where she has been a resident for the past three years, to celebrate her 100th birthday.
She is well known in Longhorsley, where she lived for 27 years.
Jessie was born in Newcastle and before she got married, she taught dance and worked at Macey’s.
She met the love of her life Gordon at a Saturday night hop in Amble, but after being impressed with their first encounter, a misunderstanding meant that romance between the two of them appeared to be over.
Gordon called her and they arranged to meet ‘under the jeweller’s clock’. He went to Goldsmiths, however she went to Samuels.
Thankfully, fate stepped in and reunited them. Jessie usually got the bus home from work, but on one lovely evening she decided to walk home with a friend and she came across Gordon during the walk.
The couple were married in 1939 at Jesmond. He was a headteacher and they lived in Newcastle until he died. They had been married for 48 years.
She then lived at Reivers Gate in Longhorsley until she was 97 when, after having a fall, she moved to East Riding Care Home.
Jessie has two children, John and Mahrea, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
