Morpeth extend lead to 20 points
Liam Henderson scored twice as Morpeth got back to winning ways with a 2-0 home win over Team Northumbria at Craik Park on Monday.
This followed on from a 1-1 away draw against Shildon on Saturday.
The four points gleaned from the two games means the Highwaymen now hold a 20-point lead at the top of Northern League 1. They have 83 points with Consett the next best on 63.
On Saturday, Morpeth were forced to come from behind after Shildon took an early third minute lead when Adam Gell toe-ended a shot past Karl Dryden.
Joe Walton levelled matters with a 63rd minute penalty after Walton was fouled, but for all their superiority and possession of the ball they could not force a winner.
On Monday it was Morpeth’s turn to take an early lead, with Henderson opening the scoring after only six minutes.
The forward challenged goalkeeper Charles Murphy for a high ball, and as it fell kindly for him he cleverly back-heeled it into the net.
Team Northumbria were by no means out of the game, and they created a number of openings, but Town were resolute at the back and managed to keep them at bay.
The decisive second goal came in the 71st minute when Henderson doubled his tally for the evening, thumping a low drive into the corner of the net after it fell invitingly for him in the box.
On Thursday (March 29) Morpeth will be back in action away against Marske United (7.45pm kick-off).
