Morpeth increase pressure on league leaders
Bridlington 12-20 Morpeth RFC
Morpeth continued to put further pressure on the league leaders with a crucial away win against a highly competitive Bridlington outfit.
This was an excellent result against a side who have performed consistently well throughout the season.
As ever, when faced with a long away trip there a couple of changes to the Morpeth side, but that didn’t faze the team who produced a typical dominant forward performance the highlight of which was the back-row trio of Burnham, Williams and Craigs who were outstanding throughout.
Morpeth started the game with instant success when Ben Hornby slotted over a penalty within three minutes.
Bridlington, who defended well against the forward dominance, were unable to prevent the Northumbrian going further ahead on 30 minutes when scrum half Elliott dived over for the touch down from a push over set piece.
Hornby again was on target with the conversion to take the score to 10-0 in Morpeth’s favour. Yet Bridlington were not to be denied and reduced the deficit to five points with an unconverted try making the half time score 10-5 in Morpeth’s favour.
The second half continued in much the same vein with Morpeth’s dominance against a team that refused to lie down.
It took a Morpeth penalty try again from a dominant attacking scrum to further increase the lead to 17-5 on 68 minutes. Bridlington then scored a converted try on 73 minutes setting up a grandstand finish, with the score at 17-12. Morpeth won the restart and thought they had sealed the game when Liam Allen raced over in the corner only to have the try disallowed with a foot in touch.
It was Ben Hornby who settled the game and Morpeth’s nerves with a final 3 points on 77 minutes, making the score 20-12.
