Morpeth produced a stunning display to win the Northumberland Senior Cup at Northern’s McCracken Park, proving just how far this emerging side has come this season.

Park produced a spirited display yet no one can deny this ultimately became a comfortable victory.

The ground conditions were excellent, albeit a gusting wind, was blowing almost from end to end with Park having the best of the elements in the first half.

It was Morpeth who provided the early pressure and took the lead with a really good score, fly half Phillips who excelled both in attack and defence throughout, made the initial break, offloading with timing to skipper Hill, who himself offloaded to scrum half Elliott who scampered for yet another classic try by the posts, which Phillips converted.7-0 to Morpeth.

Then with further Morpeth pressure from an attacking scrum Defty took advantage of a retreating Park pack securing a penalty which Phillips put over making the score 10-0 after 20 minutes.

Park took the game to Morpeth and were rightly rewarded with a penalty before the interval making the half time score 10-3.

Morpeth then had the elements in their favour, skipper Hill leading from the front, supported by outstanding props Carmichael and Moody, they took the play to Park in the first 10 minutes of the second half which resulted in two further Phillips penalties making the score line 16-3.

Morpeth always looked threatening in the early stages of the second half and scored a final try when a superb miss out pass by Phillips saw Turner finish well in the corner for an unconverted try, making the final score 21-3.

The victory meant Morpeth returned the County Cup to Mitford Road for the first time since 2008.
