Ian Lavery donned a hard hat and high vis jacket last week to carry out the ground-breaking ceremony for McCarthy and Stone’s new Retirement Living development in Morpeth.
The MP for Wansbeck was joined by representatives of the company to officially mark the start of construction at the former Davidsons of Morpeth site, which is next to the Telford Bridge.
He also took the opportunity to view the forthcoming plans for the complex, which received planning permission from Northumberland County Council last year.
It will feature 55 one and two-bedroom age-exclusive apartments for those over 60, with sales release expected in October this year.
Mr Lavery said: “Living independently and securely is so vital with an ever-ageing population and it is incredibly important to provide local homeowners with suitable options for downsizing, so it is fantastic to see developments such as this in Morpeth.”
The facilities will include a homeowner’s lounge, maintained landscaped gardens in which to relax and a convenient guest suite should homeowners have friends or relatives to stay.
A house manager will also be on hand during office hours to ensure the smooth day-to-day running of the complex.
Liz Green, regional sales and marketing director for McCarthy and Stone, said: “We are delighted that Mr Lavery was able to take time out of his busy schedule to visit our Morpeth development and take a look at the plans for the site and the apartments that are now being built.”
