National award for grateful newsagent

A Morpeth newsagent who successfully battled cancer has thanked his employees after receiving a prestigious national award.

Chris Guy with the Newsagent of the Month accolade awarded by the National Federation of Retail Newsagents.

Jerry Hayes of the National Federation of Retail Newsagents recently paid a surprise visit to Beaumont Newsagency in Kirkhill.

He presented Chris Guy with the Newsagent of the Month accolade, awarded in association with Mail Newspapers.

Chris started Hadston Newsagency in November 1994 and ran it until December 2009. Beaumont opened in December 2002.

The award is based on sales performance, dedication and the comments of the public, including customer satisfaction.

In November 2016, Chris was diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Following chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and an operation in May 2017, he received the all-clear in the autumn. He still has hospital check-ups every three months.

Chris said: “It was a shock to receive the award in that manner, but I was very pleased.

“This accolade reflects the hard work and dedication of the staff here, as well as the paperboys and papergirls.

“It also shows how well we have built up a rapport with our regular customers.

“Going through cancer made me appreciate even more having a good quality of life and the newsagent’s role in the community.

“As well as our home news delivery service, we will take food along to nearby sheltered housing if the residents can’t get out due to the weather conditions.

“I’m extremely grateful to the surgeons and hospital staff at the Northumbria and Freeman hospitals, without whom I wouldn’t be here.

“I would also like to thank the staff and friends who looked after the place brilliantly during this period.”

Beaumont Newsagency delivers across Morpeth and to homes in Longhirst, Mitford and Pegswood.

It got the papers out to people on all but one day during the winter and the reason it could not on that day was because the papers did not arrive.

Chris added: “We pride ourselves on both customer retention and the acquisition of new customers.”
