The housebuilder ran a competition with the school to name the development, with the winning entry and name of the development being Blossom Park.

The children were also asked to come up with five additional street names. Entries reflected the nature in the area, representing Barratt Homes’ recently renewed partnership with the RSPB.

Bluebell Rise, Rose Gardens, Poppy Lane, Appletree View and Iris Drive were the chosen street names.

Although concerns were raised by people living next to the development, the scheme for land north-east of Hebron Avenue was approved by a majority vote at a meeting of Northumberland County Council’s strategic planning committee.

The overall winner received a £50 Amazon voucher and the other pupils received £20 Amazon vouchers for their winning street names.

Pegswood Primary School headteacher Andrew Waterfield said: “The children had great fun coming up with names for Barratt Homes’ new development and we will take great pride in seeing our pupils’ winning names come to life over the year.”

Construction works on the 118 new homes are due to start later this year.

Christie Edge, sales manager at Barratt Homes North East, said: “We received some brilliant, wildlife-themed entries and everyone did an excellent job, so we’d like to congratulate the winners and thank everyone at the school for their efforts.”
