Northumberland has been announced as a nominated finalist for the Best UK Holiday County/Destination in the prestigious 2015 British Travel Awards.

The winners will be determined by the public, who have until September 30 to cast their vote, with the winners announced at the BTA Gala Awards Dinner, being held in London on November 25.

This is the second time Northumberland has been nominated. Last year, the county known as England’s last ‘hidden gem’ secured the magnificent achievement of Silver in its first attempt – narrowly missing out to six-time winner Cornwall.

This year, the awards campaign is being spearheaded by Northumberland Tourism in partnership with Active Northumberland and Northumberland County Council. Riding high on the recent successes at the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence and the national popularity of the More Tales from Northumberland with Robson Green series, it is hoped the county can do one better and claim the title of Best UK Holiday County/Destination 2015.

Coun Val Tyler, cabinet member for arts, culture and leisure, said: “Northumberland is a fabulous county, there really is something for everyone. From beautiful landscapes, iconic attractions and a great coastline with wide, clean beaches to walking paths, cycleways and so much more.

“Our visitor economy is hugely important to Northumberland, with 8.8 million visitors generating £730m to the local economy. Winning Silver in 2014 was a huge achievement for our first time as a Best UK Holiday County/Destination nominee.

“To win Gold in 2015 would be amazing. I’d urge everyone who lives in or loves Northumberland to get voting.”

The British Travel Awards is a proudly independent organisation, with the votes verified by leading global accountancy practitioners Deloitte.
