PARKING: Sale is not in town's interest

The decision to include The Terrace car park in the sale of the Morpeth Riverside site is a very curious one and I believe it cannot be in the best interests of Morpeth, its inhabitants and visitors.

There are currently hundreds of new houses being built and planned in and around Morpeth, which will significantly increase the demand for parking in the town. To sell The Terrace makes no sense.

Loss of car park would put extra pressure on parking in the central part of the town, and any traffic mishap will certainly lead to gridlock.

The loss will also reduce the number of pedestrians traversing that east section of Bridge Street, adversely affecting the businesses there.

Visually, building on that site will detract from the openness and attractiveness of Morpeth. Historically the site has been an open space for 200 years or so.

Quoting from the History, Directory and Gazetteer of the Counties of Durham and Northumberland, by William Parson and William White, published in 1827: “The Terrace, on the bank of the river, a little to the east of the bridge, is a public promenade, tastefully laid out for the accommodation of the inhabitants, at the expense of the Corporation, and the Earl of Carlisle.”

Retention of the car park would keep it as a public promenade and it would remain for the accommodation of the inhabitants, and their cars, and would certainly help greatly to meet the needs of modern traffic, as it does now.
