MORPETH’S ‘secret garden’ has been named Best Urban Project in the Love Northumberland Awards.
The Old Bakehouse Millennium Green, off Newgate Street, has been maintained by trustees and around 40 volunteers since being created from a piece of wasteland.
It provides a peaceful haven away from the bustling streets and as well as raising funds to develop the garden, the trustees regularly organise community events, such as bird and bat-box making, school projects, fairs and carol singing.
Trustee Pat Binks said: “It is lovely to get the award for all of the volunteers. There are a lot of people who help us with the Green so it is a thank you to them all for their work and shows that it is all worthwhile.”
