History was made last year when Chris Offord handed over to Morpeth Lions first lady President Margaret Trewick. This year it was the turn of Margaret to hand over to Richard Nash, who has been a member for 35 years.

This is not Richard’s first experience of the lead role. His first term of office was in 1987, a mere four years after joining the club. In the meantime, he has taken on many roles within the club and at district and zone level.

Richard is married to Fiona and they have a son, Robbie, who is hoping to go to university this autumn. He is an agronomist with the farming company Agrii.

On being installed as President, Richard paid warm tribute to Margaret, who has had to face many administrative challenges as a result of the club becoming a registered charity. This was despite her suffering major injuries early on in her Presidency.

He said: “I look forward to building on the foundations laid down by Margaret and I know that I have a good team of trustees, committee chairs and members who will help the club to thrive over the coming year.”

Les Brindley was elected Vice President whilst Geoff Bushell remains Treasurer and Ian Mills as Secretary.

The club meets at 8pm on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at the Conservative Club in Newgate Street, Morpeth. The next meeting is on August 28.

The Scots have a saying “many a mickle maks a muckle”, and that is certainly the case with the collecting cans that Yorkshire Trading Company has in its Morpeth store.

It was four years ago when the store opened that Lion Simon Pringle asked if he could leave collecting cans in the hope that generous customers could leave some change for the benefit of the community. Since then, Simon has called fortnightly to collect the cans, giving a running total of the amounts received. The total has now exceeded £1,000.

President Richard Nash called to thank Store Manager Rob Thurman for the continuing support.

Richard said: “We know that the people of Morpeth are kind to the Lions Club of Morpeth. This, perhaps, is due to the fact that over the 46 years of our existence we have always concentrated on meeting the needs of Morpeth and surrounding areas.

“The collecting cans project has involved a number of Morpeth shops allowing us to leave a can with them. Simon firstly ensures the shop is not collecting for any other of the many worthy local or national charities.

“Sometimes there are only pennies in the cans, however this still adds up and now almost £2,000 has been fed into the club’s charity account.

“I thank Rob, his staff and their generous customers for their magnificent contributions. I hope this connection will continue for many years to come.”

Rob said: “Yorkshire Trading Company is very happy to continue to support the Lions, knowing that money collected in our Morpeth store stays in Morpeth for the benefit of our community.”

Many of the coins collected are pennies, possibly as much as half. Simon calculated that £500 in pennies is approximately two-thirds of a mile long, or 275ft high.
