Doggy delights at new event in Morpeth
Sanderson Arcade in Morpeth welcomed pooches of all shapes and sizes for some four-legged fun.
As well as market traders, demos and talks, the first ever Sanderson Barkade event saw more than 40 dogs competing in a range of different categories.
West Highland Terrier Lola was voted the Best in Show, and the hamper prize for her owner was donated by My Pet HQ.
Lottie Thompson, centre manager at Sanderson Arcade, said: “After the effects of the last year (due to Covid-19), many of us have relied on our furry friends to help get us through. This is why we wanted to create an outdoor event to give them a treat and also have a bit of fun.”
On Saturday a mini market took over the Arcade, with dog traders including Evie’s Pupcakes, Teddy’s Place and luxury dog wear from Betty’s Boutique, a pop-up from Sanderson’s Boutique Department Store.
In addition to hydration stations situated throughout the Arcade, pooches could also treat themselves to a ‘pawsecco’ from local business Fizz on the Tyne.
Sunday was a packed morning of talks and demos from dog traders including Canine Mechanics, specialising in canine massage, Jenny Hunter dog training, who gave tips on helping dogs to socialise after Covid, Rhian from Content K9 Company who did a demo on nail clipping and Rebecca Ashworth Earle, an adventure dog photographer, who discussed tips and tricks for getting the perfect photo.
The Sanderson Barkade competitions took place in the afternoon and the overall champion was picked from the category winners – Keely Jukes and Lola were successful in the Fancy Dress section dressed up as Carole Baskin and Tiger King.
The ‘owner most like their dog’ winner was Rachel with her Hungarian Vizsla Freya: ‘Both sassy redheads’.
Macy, a 13-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, was the Golden Oldie winner.
The judges really deliberated on the Best Puppy category and eventually decided on Doris with owner Jenna.
Best Rescue went to a Romanian rescue called Lucy with owner Hazel. The ‘pup triathlon’ winner (waggiest tail, quickest sit and solid pawshake) was a last-minute entry – Lydia with dog Mabel.
