Mayor of Morpeth re-elected for another year

Coun David Bawn has been re-elected as Mayor of Morpeth for a second consecutive term.

Coun Bawn appointed his mother, Coun Betty Bawn, as his Mayoress and re-confirmed the Rector of Morpeth, Rev Simon White, as his chaplain.

Speaking afterwards, Coun Bawn said: “I am deeply honoured that the town council has done me this singular honour of re-electing me for another year.

“So many things have been curtailed by the pandemic and the civic role of the Mayor has been one of them. Unfortunately, we have not been able to carry out the normal civic and community events in the last year, which has also influenced how much money I could raise for my chosen charity – Contact Morpeth Mental Health Group.

“Despite the restrictions, we have managed to raise a phenomenal total of £12,644.31 in the past year and I will be continuing to fund-raise for this phenomenal charity this year.”

Coun Rachael Hogg was also unanimously re-elected Deputy Mayor and she appointed Andrew Guy as her consort.

Coun Bawn is pictured purchasing the first coffee from the new Pavilion Cafe in Carlisle Park, which opened for takeaways on Monday. It is open for coffees and snacks from 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sundays. The cafe will open for sit-ins on June 21 (paddling pool will open on the same day) if Covid restrictions are lifted as planned.
