It was by launched by Joanna Lumley on November 12, 2009, and the occasion was marked by the unveiling of pieces of art by local artist Sarah Farooqi and students from King Edward VI School in Morpeth, followed by a special reception at Barluga.

The centre remains fully let and many of the original retailers are still a key part of the town centre shopping centre – including M&S, Fat Face, Laura Ashley, O2, Clarks and New Look.

A host of independent companies are also a key part of the Arcade’s success.

Mark Dransfield, managing director of Dransfield Properties Ltd, spoke at the event about the challenges faced by the industry over the last 10 years and the need for communities and businesses to work together to deliver strong town centres.

He added: “It is particularly rewarding to see that so many of those businesses who were with us on the opening day back in 2009 are still here today, continuing to do well and investing in the town.

“Some of them, particularly the independent businesses, really took a leap of faith and it’s great to see companies like The Jewellers Guild and Central Bean continuing to be such a big part of the Arcade.

“We look forward to continuing our collaborative work here in Morpeth to build on the success of the last decade.”
