Morpeth roastery on two award shortlists

Morpeth-based Caribe Coffee Company has been shortlisted twice in the regional finals of the Great British Entrepreneur Awards.

Being in with a chance of winning the North East Food and Drink Entrepreneur of the Year and the Family Business categories recognises the hard work of couple Wil-mer and Elle Carcamo.

Wilmer moved to the UK in 2017 to be with his wife and son who had moved back earlier that year to be with family when their son was diagnosed with a rare genetic illness.

His descendants are coffee farmers and he decided to start importing specialty grade green coffee and set-up a local roastery with online retail and wholesale presence.

Wilmer and Elle are both passionate about excellent quality coffee, but also strive to be be 100 per cent sustainable with respect to supporting the farmers in Honduras, as well as reducing waste in the UK.

The business has already achieved national award success.

Following success at the regional event, Wilmer went to Stratford-upon-Avon for the final of the 2019 Young Traders Market competition and he ended up being the winner of the groceries category.

He was then invited onto an episode of The One Show on BBC One with the four other category winners.

Founded in 2013, the Great British Entrepreneur Awards acknowledges the hard work and inspiring stories of entrepreneurs and businesses in the United Kingdom.

The judges of these awards include Hayley Parsons, who founded Go Compare, Cath Kidston, Lord Bilimoria of Cobra Beer and Kanya King, she is the founder of the MOBO awards.

This year, with face-to-face events challenging, the regional heats will be celebrated online on September 23.
