Figures for June 7 showed a jump of 50 positive cases in a day, with another 32 the following day, with four people admitted to hospital in the last seven days.

Health officials have revealed that the Delta variant – previously known as the Indian variant – is the most common one circulating, and urged people to follow the ‘Hands, Face, Space, Fresh Air’ guidance.

Liz Morgan, Director of Public Health at Northumberland County Council, said: "We have seen an increase in Covid cases in Northumberland and, like in many other areas, it looks as if the Delta variant is the most common one circulating now.

"This is a reminder to us all that Covid is still with us and that we should all continue to be cautious to protect our families, friends and colleagues.

“Irrespective of which variant is circulating, the measures we can use to protect ourselves and others when going about our daily lives are the same.

"Remember to follow the Hands, Face, Space, Fresh Air guidance; come forward for both doses of the vaccine as soon as you’re offered them; self-isolate and book a PCR test straight away if you develop symptoms; and make use of home-testing kits to reduce the risk of spreading Covid without knowing it.

"We're asking people to continue to be careful, especially when mixing indoors where the variant can spread more easily. Socialising outdoors remains the safest option."

Latest figures show that 222,798 people in Northumberland have received the first dose of the Covid vaccine, and 160,433 their second dose.
