The damage to the glass means that the words on the Poop Deck and Stepping Stones sign – organised by Greater Morpeth Development Trust, with funding support from other bodies – cannot be read.

It also includes information about ‘Collingwood Oaks’ planted by school pupils in October 2005 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

Morpeth Town Council agreed to take on the maintenance of the sign a couple of years ago and the vandalism was reported to the local authority earlier this week.

Tracey Bell, Morpeth Town Council clerk, said: “Arrangements will be made for this vandal damaged sign to be removed in due course.”
