Sending a message to the future: time capsules buried at two schools

A time capsule filled with photos, paintings and details of day-to-day activities that tells the story of the last six months has been buried at each school for future generations to unearth.

Collaborative activities to highlight what life has been like for children during the coronavirus pandemic have included creating stories and poems.

Glen Whitehead, headteacher at Stobhillgate First School, said: “Our children have been amazing over the past six months and we were very keen to capture their positivity, resilience and community spirit in some way.

Burial of the time capsule is carried out by pupils and a member of staff at Stobhillgate First School.

“It is clear that this period of time will be studied by schoolchildren in years to come, so we wanted to make sure that we gathered some important historical sources that future generations can use.”

Sandra Ford, headteacher at Abbeyfields First School, said: “It is really important that we capture this unique moment in history and it is truly fascinating to think that this might be discovered in years to come.

“The whole school community has pulled together and we have worked as a family to ensure that we looked after each other every step of the way.”

New school admissions are now open, with limited places available for September 2021.
