A RECRUITMENT drive is under way to find new police cadets.

Northumbria Police hopes to recruit more than 100 volunteer cadets at six locations, including Northumberland.

The youngsters, who must be 14 or 15 years old and live in the area, will develop communication, team building and problem solving skills in the two-year scheme, as well as visit specialised police units and achieve a Duke of Edinburgh award.

The initiative follows a successful pilot in Gateshead, which involved 18 teenagers over 12 months.

Applicants should be in Years 9 and 10 at school, born before June 1, 1998, medically fit and up for a challenge.

The closing date for applications is Saturday, April 14.
