Northumbria Police is warning motorists to avoid driving tonight unless absolutely necessary as severe weather disrupts the region’s road networks.
Heavy rain has been falling throughout the day and is expected to continue into this evening causing some flooding across the region.
Officers have been deployed to manage traffic in some of the worst affected areas and help clear some of the region’s major spine roads.
Two major roads are currently closed due to large amounts of standing water and diversions are in place.
They include closures of the A19 between the Testos roundabout and Hedworth Lane in Boldon Colliery and the Westbound carriageway of Durham Road between Burdon Lane and the Houghton Cut in Houghton-Le-Spring
Other significant roads affected by the flooding include:
- Sandy Lane/Spine Road in Gosforth
- Stamfordham Road in Newcastle
- Woolsington Bypass between Newbiggin Lane and Callerton Lane in Newcastle
Police will continue to work with partner agencies, including the local authorities, to support those who have been affected by flooding.
There is no major flooding of residential properties at this time but police will be working closely with partners to support residents if required.
If anyone has any concerns about the flooding they should contact the relevant local authority or the police by calling 101. In an emergency, always dial 999.
