A NORTHUMBERLAND MP’s campaign to Save Our Cheques has proved a winner.
Berwick MP Sir Alan Beith set up a petition for residents and businesses across his constituency to call for cheques to be retained.
Now the Payments Council has confirmed that cheques will continue to be used for as long as customers need them and the target for possible closure of cheque clearing of 2018 has been scrapped.
Sir Alan, whose constituency stretches as far as Morpeth, said: “I am absolutely delighted that the Payments Council has listened to what people have been saying.
“Getting rid of cheques would have caused a great deal of inconvenience to small businesses, charities and many of the most vulnerable people in Northumberland and I am very pleased their voices have been heard.”
