MP GUY Opperman is aiming to be back at work as soon as possible following brain surgery.

He underwent a successful operation last week to remove a tumour.

As he recovers at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, he has spoken of his appreciation for the hundreds of messages that have poured into his constituency offices.

Through his personal blog, Mr Opperman said: “These past few weeks have in many ways brought it home even more how lucky I am to be a Member of Parliament representing the Hexham constituency.

“It is an immense privilege and a real pleasure to represent this wonderful part of our country. And whatever happens I will go on standing up for you, tackling issues from fuel poverty to housing, and doing my utmost to make you all proud and be a good constituency MP.

“I cannot thank you all enough for your support at this difficult time and promise to be back fighting fit championing our region as soon as possible.”

Renowned surgeon Neil Kitchen carried out surgery to remove the tumour on Friday and the operation was pronounced a success.

Until he recovers fully, his constituency office will conduct business as far as possible.
