Pressure mounts for A1 dualling decision

MP Sir Alan Beith is pushing for faster action on A1 dualling after hearing that all the evidence is now in place.

The Berwick Member, whose constituency stretches to Morpeth, is writing to Ministers to ask for a quick decision on dualling the major route on a stretch between Mopreth and Felton, as well as at Mousen Bends near Belford.

The Department for Transport has said no further analysis of the road is needed at those points.

Sir Alan said: “The Liberal Democrat Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander has told me he wants to see the work go ahead and the Transport Secretary also seems keen so I want to see if we can get the decision-making speeded up and get a firm plan in place for starting the road upgrades we need here in Northumberland.”

Campaigner Julie Porksen, who will stand for the Berwick seat at the next election, said: “Officials have told me they hope a decision will be made in time for the Autumn Statement, but we are asking them to bring forward the decision on these stretches so work can get under way.”
