Northumbria Police is hosting a community event in Ponteland tomorrow to help residents protect themselves against fraudsters.

Staff from the crime prevention team will be at the Barclays branch on Main Street between 10am and noon to offer tips to protect people from bank fraud scams and answer questions about scamming issues.

Neighbourhood Inspector Kevin Oates said: “We’ve had a recent spate of telephone scammers targeting people in Ponteland, claiming to be from the Metropolitan Police, asking people to move funds from one bank account to another.

“We want to stress that a police officer would never ask you to do this. This is the work of fraudsters.

“We’re hosting this crime prevention event to get the safety message across..

“Officers are also distributing advice leaflets to residents and carrying out additional reassurance patrols in Ponteland this week.

“If you see an officer on foot patrol, please stop and have a chat regarding any local issues or concerns.”
