PRODUCE: A trademark of county quality
Bridget Gubbins raised the importance of backing local businesses, (Morpeth Herald, March 1).
Morpeth as a town has done better than most at creating an environment where small businesses can thrive.
That’s in no small part down to the community spirit that runs through the town, which has allowed family-run and independent shops to flourish.
With that in mind, I would strongly urge all Morpethians to get behind the county council’s Produced In Northumberland scheme, which is starting to gain strength.
Produced In Northumberland is a trademark of quality granted to food and drink products of Northumbrian origin.
To be part of the scheme producers are also required to demonstrate high standards of animal welfare, ethical sourcing and sustainable production.
Northumberland County Council is the first authority to be pioneering such a scheme, and it already includes Doddington Dairy, the Northumberland Cheese Company and Heppell Gin.
It starts with buying local, but soon consumers worldwide will be able to measure the quality of their goods in a single question: “Is it Northumbrian?”
