A Northumberland MP is looking forward to his new challenge after receiving a promotion.
Conservative Guy Opperman is now a Government whip. The role could be a difficult one at times because the party only has a slim majority in the House of Commons.
The MP for Hexham, which includes Ponteland and Stannington, increased his majority in the recent General Election vote.
He said: “I’m delighted that the Prime Minister has asked me to become a minister in the whips department.
“It’s going to be difficult to get all the Government business done, but this is an excellent opportunity for me as I’m part of a team whose job it is to help implement the Conservative manifesto.”
Mr Opperman added that the job will not prevent him from representing his constituents as much as he did in the previous five years and there is a misconception about what a whip does, saying: “You need to be an advocate and a persuader, not an enforcer.”
