Result of CQC inspection is outstanding for company

The husband and wife team who run a home care company serving clients in Morpeth, Ponteland, Cramlington, Blyth and surrounding areas have been given the care industry’s top rating just 18 months after setting up their business.

Guy and Carole Kirk opened the South East Northumberland office of Home Instead Senior Care in April last year.

Following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the business has received an outstanding rating.

Inspectors noted that Home Instead matches caregivers to clients based on shared interests and personalities and there were many positive comments from clients and clients’ families.

The CQC report includes the following: ‘Staff demonstrated a real empathy for the people they cared for. They spoke with pride about the importance of ensuring people’s needs were held in the forefront of everything that they did.’

A dementia-friendly community initiative was also mentioned. Mr Kirk, Café des Amis owner Wendy Smith and Tony Woods of the Justice and Peace Church group in Morpeth started the project earlier this year with the support of the Alzheimer’s Society.

Morpeth Mayor Jack Gebhard was among those highlighting the ‘really good’ information sessions led by Mr Kirk.

Commenting on the inspection, Mr Kirk said: “We are humbled by the very many positive comments contained within the report and so proud of our team.

“We share a vision and that is to allow people to live in their own homes, leading a fulfilled life and it’s lovely to see that we are allowing people to achieve this.

“Our care team does a fantastic job and we are extremely grateful to them for everything that they do.”

The CQC inspectors heard about some specific examples during the inspection – including one caregiver who created two gardens for a client that loved gardening and another caregiver was determined to get a client exercising and suggested ten pin bowling on a video game console, which worked really well.

Mr and Mrs Kirk’s ‘special ambassador’, cocker spaniel Martha, visits some clients and the report includes comments by a few of those who see her saying how happy they are when she is there as she has a comforting presence.
