Work to improve a stretch of the A1 in Northumberland starts on Monday.

The work on the northbound carriageway between Seven Mile Bridge and Stannington Bridge involves resurfacing the carriageway and replacing kerbs, road markings and studs.

It includes improvements to lighting in the area and resurfacing work on the Shotton Interchange northbound entry slip road.

The scheme, which is due to be completed by Friday, September 18, will be carried out in phases.

Highways England’s project manager Steve Bishop said: “We are carrying out this improvement work mainly at night to minimise disruption to road users. It’s essential that the work takes place so that drivers can benefit from smoother and safer journeys.”

From Monday to Sunday, August 9, the northbound A1 carriageway will be closed from 8pm to 6am from Seaton Burn to Shotton Interchange. Traffic will be diverted at Seaton Burn Interchange to Fisher Lane roundabout and on to the Old Great North Road towards Shotton Interchange.

From Saturday, August 8, there will be a closure of the A1 southbound carriageway between Stannington Station and Seaton Burn from 8pm to 6am. Traffic will be diverted via the A192 and A1068 to Fisher Land roundabout and back on to the A1.

Work will be carried out via a mixture of daytime and nighttime work from Sunday, August 9, to Wednesday, September 15. The northbound carriageway will be closed for resurfacing and traffic will run in contraflow on the A1 southbound carriageway from south of the A197 Clifton Interchange to north of Seven Mile Bridge. No work will take place over the bank holiday between Thursday, August 27, and Monday, August 31.

During the works, the Shotton Interchange northbound entry slip road will be fully resurfaced. Work will take place at various times between Monday, August 10, and Thursday, August 27, in a mixture of daytime and nighttime work, and the slip road will be closed to through traffic when this work is taking place. Traffic wishing to travel north will be diverted south to Seaton Burn Interchange and into the contraflow.

Bus services will be affected by the closure and a dedicated replacement bus stop and shuttle bus has been agreed with Arriva.

The shuttle bus will start at Stannington Village five minutes before the scheduled service and take passengers between the village and Blagdon next to the junction with Blagdon Lane where customers will be able to rejoin the service bus. It will then go to Stannington Station to take passengers into Morpeth.
