Safer travel for wheelchair users

A SCHEME to make travel safer for wheelchair users has been introduced to Northumberland.

The Wheelchair Passport Scheme provides information for taxi and mini-bus drivers, as well as passenger assistants, on how wheelchairs should be secured in a vehicle.

There is a pouch attached to the wheelchair with information and photographs about how to secure the wheelchair, as well as details about the needs of each user.

Northumberland County Council Executive Member Lesley Rickerby said: “This is a simple and very effective way of making sure drivers and assistants have the information they need to keep wheelchair users safe while travelling in vehicles.”
