PUBLIC seating may return to Ponteland’s main shopping centre.
Former Ponteland town councillor Sheila Campbell asked current members of the authority about the situation regarding the replacement of the seats within Merton Way.
They were taken out by the police on a temporary basis because officers believed the measure would help to reduce anti-social behaviour by certain groups of young people in the area.
However, they were also used by elderly residents to stop and chat and some residents believe they should return.
The delay to the Merton Way regeneration scheme means that construction works which would have prevented the seats from being put back in place are not going to happen in the next 12 months at least.
Ponteland Mayor Peter Cowey said that the police will soon be reviewing the period without the seating and this will determine whether or not they are re-introduced.
