SHOPS: Stay local to support town

editorial image

I was devastated to learn that Varleys, another of Morpeth’s traditional and much loved shops, is closing at the end of the month.

What with Smail’s and Appleby’s now gone, I dread to think what will be next. Thank goodness Gebhard’s, Price’s and Martin’s are still holding up.

If we want them to stay with us, this is a plea to Morpeth people to use them. In fact, I find it perfectly possible to do 80 per cent of my shopping at those three shops, supplemented by visits to the supermarkets for items such as cheese and wine.

Please, to retain our town centre, shop local, and have a chat with the friendly staff while you’re there.
